Peyote POD Tutorial

Learn how to create a Peyote POD with this basic Peyote POD Tutorial! Perfect for handmade gifts, Christmas ornaments, and unique beadwork.

A Peyote POD is a decorative beaded element crafted using tiny seed beads, most commonly Miyuki Delica or Toho beads. These intricate pods require precision and skill, making them a beautiful addition to jewelry and accessories as pendants, charms, or decorative components.

In this guide, I will take you through the process of creating a 3-sided Peyote POD. Once you master this structure, you will be able to make Peyote PODs in any size.

Peyote POD Tutorial – Things Needed

Tools & Materals

  • Seed Beads 11/0 – 3 colors (e.g. Toho or Miyuki Delica, but due to the different sizes, don’t mix them),
  • Fire Polish or Bicone Beads 3mm,
  • Matching Thread,
  • Beading Needle,
  • Scissors,
  • Favourite Filling (e.g. filling used in Amigurumi)

Bead Legend

  • A – Toho Round Gold 11/0 – 150 pcs
  • B – Toho Round Turqoise – 108 pcs
  • C – Toho Round Crocus – 108 pcs
  • Firle Polish 3 mm – 2 pcs (optional)

Peyote POD – how to…

  1. Pick up 3A beads, then pass the thread back through the first A bead.

2. Pick up 2 more A beads and pass the thread through the previous 2A beads, as shown in the second diagram.

3. Pick up 2A beads (as corner beads) and stitch them in place. Then begin the first classic peyote area and pick up 1B bead. Pass the thread through the next A bead from the previous row. Repeat those steps on the opposite side but instead of 1B bead pick up 1C bead.

Adding the last bead in the row, pass the thread through two beads

4. Follow the instruction from the previous row. Note, that both peyote areas will increase by one bead in each next row. Add as many rows as needed.

5. Starting from row 4 , you will notice the beadwork begins to fold. Each subsequent row will give the first Peyote POD element more shape.

6.After reaching the desired size of the element (e.g., 10 or 20 rows), make two more elements. Then, join them using the zigzag method.

7. Leave one side unstitched, add decorations at the tops, stuff the POD with your favorite filling, and finally, join the last two edges.

Your first Peyote POD is now complete.
